classical pathway
The classical pathway is a part of the complement system, which plays a crucial role in the immune response. It is activated when antibodies, specifically IgM or IgG, bind to antigens on the surface of pathogens. This binding triggers a cascade of protein activations that ultimately leads to the destruction of the pathogen.
Once activated, the classical pathway enhances opsonization, making it easier for phagocytes to engulf and eliminate pathogens. It also promotes inflammation and helps in the formation of the membrane attack complex, which can directly lyse target cells. This pathway is essential for effective immune defense.
