Complement System
The complement system is a part of the immune system that helps the body fight infections. It consists of a series of proteins that work together to identify and destroy pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses. When activated, these proteins can enhance the ability of antibodies to clear microbes and promote inflammation, which helps recruit immune cells to the site of infection.
There are three main pathways to activate the complement system: the classical pathway, the lectin pathway, and the alternative pathway. Each pathway can lead to the formation of a complex that punctures the membranes of pathogens, ultimately leading to their destruction. This system plays a crucial role in maintaining the body’s defense against diseases.
