Lectin Pathway
The lectin pathway is one of the three pathways of the complement system, which plays a crucial role in the immune response. It is activated when specific proteins, called lectins, bind to carbohydrates on the surface of pathogens. This binding triggers a cascade of reactions that ultimately leads to the destruction of the invading microorganisms.
Once activated, the lectin pathway enhances the ability of immune cells to recognize and eliminate pathogens. It also promotes inflammation and helps recruit other immune components to the site of infection, ensuring a robust defense against harmful agents.
