amatoxins
Amatoxins are a group of toxic compounds primarily found in certain species of mushrooms, particularly those in the Amanita genus, such as the infamous Amanita phalloides, commonly known as the death cap mushroom. These toxins inhibit RNA polymerase II, an essential enzyme for synthesizing proteins, leading to severe liver and kidney damage when ingested.
The effects of amatoxins can be delayed, often appearing 6 to 12 hours after consumption. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, which can progress to liver failure and potentially be fatal without prompt medical treatment. Early recognition and intervention are crucial for survival.
