alerce
The alerce is a type of tree native to the southern regions of South America, particularly found in Chile and Argentina. It belongs to the Cupressaceae family and is scientifically known as *Fitzroya cupressoides*. Alerce trees can grow to impressive heights, often reaching over 50 meters, and can live for more than a thousand years, making them some of the oldest living trees in the world.
Alerce wood is highly valued for its durability and resistance to decay, which has led to its extensive logging in the past. Due to overexploitation, the alerce is now considered a vulnerable species, and conservation efforts are in place to protect its remaining populations in the wild.
