Zizania
Zizania is a genus of aquatic plants commonly known as wild rice. These plants are native to North America and Asia, thriving in shallow waters of lakes and rivers. They are characterized by their tall, slender stems and long, narrow leaves, which can grow up to 10 feet in height. The seeds of Zizania are edible and are often harvested for food.
There are four main species of Zizania, with Zizania aquatica and Zizania palustris being the most well-known in North America. Wild rice is not only a staple food for many Indigenous peoples but also an important habitat for various wildlife species. The cultivation and harvesting of Zizania have cultural and ecological significance.
