Zimbabwe African People's Union
The Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) is a political party in Zimbabwe founded in 1961. It was established to advocate for the rights of the African population and to fight against colonial rule. ZAPU played a significant role in the liberation struggle against British colonialism and white minority rule, often collaborating with other nationalist movements.
ZAPU was led by Joshua Nkomo, a prominent figure in Zimbabwe's fight for independence. After the country gained independence in 1980, ZAPU became a major political force, although it later faced challenges, including a split and conflict with the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU). Today, ZAPU continues to operate as a political party, focusing on issues of social justice and national unity.
