The Yellow-crowned Night Heron is a medium-sized wading bird known for its striking appearance. It has a distinctive black crown and a yellow patch on the head, along with grayish-blue plumage. This species is most active at night, feeding on a diet that mainly consists of crustaceans, particularly crabs. They are skilled hunters, using their sharp beaks to catch prey in shallow waters. The Yellow-crowned Night Heron is also known for its unique nesting habits, often building nests in trees or shrubs near water.
