Black-crowned Night Heron
The Black-crowned Night Heron is a medium-sized wading bird known for its distinctive black crown and back, contrasting with its white underparts. Adults typically measure about 24 to 28 inches in length and have a wingspan of around 40 to 45 inches. They are often found near wetlands, lakes, and rivers, where they hunt for fish, frogs, and small invertebrates.
These herons are primarily nocturnal, meaning they are most active during the night. They have a unique hunting style, often standing still and waiting for prey to come close before striking quickly. Their adaptability allows them to thrive in various habitats, including urban areas and parks.
