YPJ
The YPJ, or Women's Protection Units, is a Kurdish militia formed in 2013 in Syria. It was established to defend Kurdish communities and promote gender equality in a region affected by conflict. The YPJ is primarily composed of women fighters who play a crucial role in the fight against extremist groups, including ISIS.
The YPJ is part of the larger YPG, or People's Protection Units, which includes both male and female fighters. The organization emphasizes the empowerment of women in combat and leadership roles, challenging traditional gender norms in the region. Their efforts have garnered international attention and support for their contributions to security and women's rights.
