X-ALD
X-ALD, or X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, is a rare genetic disorder that primarily affects males. It is caused by mutations in the ABCD1 gene, which is responsible for the breakdown of very long-chain fatty acids. When this gene is defective, these fatty acids accumulate in the body, leading to damage in the adrenal glands and nervous system.
Symptoms of X-ALD can vary widely but often include behavioral changes, difficulty in school, and physical problems such as weakness or loss of coordination. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, as they can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life for affected individuals.
