Woody Stems
Woody stems are the thick, rigid parts of plants that provide structural support. They are primarily found in trees and shrubs, allowing these plants to grow tall and withstand various environmental conditions. The main component of woody stems is lignin, a complex organic polymer that strengthens the cell walls.
These stems grow in layers, with new growth occurring each year. The outer layer, called bark, protects the inner layers, which include the cambium (responsible for growth) and the xylem (which transports water and nutrients). Woody stems play a crucial role in the overall health and stability of many plants.
