Winton Formation
The Winton Formation is a geological formation located in central western Queensland, Australia. It dates back to the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 100 million years ago. This formation is primarily composed of sedimentary rocks, including sandstone and mudstone, and is known for its rich fossil deposits.
Fossils found in the Winton Formation include remains of dinosaurs, such as the large herbivore Austrosaurus and the carnivorous Tyrannosaurus rex. The area is significant for paleontological research, providing insights into the ecosystems that existed during the Late Cretaceous and contributing to our understanding of dinosaur evolution.
