Wilhelmus
The "Wilhelmus" is the national anthem of the Netherlands, recognized as one of the oldest anthems in the world. It was written in the 16th century during the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule. The lyrics express loyalty to William of Orange, the leader of the revolt, and reflect themes of freedom and resistance.
The anthem consists of 15 stanzas, but only the first is typically sung at official events. The melody is derived from a popular tune of the time, and the "Wilhelmus" is often performed at national celebrations and sports events, symbolizing Dutch identity and heritage.
