Wigilia
Wigilia is a traditional Polish Christmas Eve dinner celebrated on December 24th. It marks the beginning of the Christmas festivities and is a time for family gatherings. The meal typically includes twelve meatless dishes, symbolizing the twelve apostles, and often features barszcz (beet soup), pierogi (dumplings), and fish.
Before the meal, families share a special wafer called opłatek, breaking it and exchanging good wishes. An empty place is usually set at the table for an unexpected guest, representing hospitality and remembrance of loved ones who are no longer present.
