Wexford Rebellion
The Wexford Rebellion of 1798 was a significant uprising in Ireland against British rule. It was part of a larger movement for Irish independence and was fueled by widespread discontent among the local population, particularly the Catholic and Protestant communities. The rebellion began in May 1798 and saw thousands of rebels, known as the United Irishmen, rise up against the British government.
The conflict was marked by brutal fighting and significant casualties on both sides. The rebels initially achieved some victories, but the rebellion was ultimately suppressed by British forces. The aftermath led to harsh reprisals and a further tightening of British control over Ireland.
