Very Large Telescope
The Very Large Telescope (VLT) is an array of four optical telescopes located at the Paranal Observatory in Chile. Operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), it is designed to observe celestial objects in high detail. Each telescope has a primary mirror measuring 8.2 meters in diameter, allowing for advanced imaging and spectroscopy.
The VLT can work as a single unit or combine the light from its telescopes to create a virtual telescope with a much larger effective aperture. This capability enhances its ability to study distant galaxies, stars, and other astronomical phenomena, contributing significantly to modern astrophysics.
