Verkhoyansk is a small town located in the Sakha Republic, Russia. It is known for its extreme cold temperatures, often ranking among the coldest inhabited places on Earth. The town experiences long, harsh winters, with temperatures frequently dropping below -40 degrees Celsius (-40 degrees Fahrenheit).
Founded in 1638, Verkhoyansk has a rich history tied to the Russian exploration of Siberia. The town is situated near the Yana River and has a population of around 1,300 residents. Its economy is primarily based on reindeer herding, hunting, and fishing, reflecting the traditional lifestyles of the indigenous Yakut people.
