Venetian Nobility
The Venetian Nobility refers to the elite class that emerged in the Republic of Venice from the 7th century until its fall in 1797. This group held significant political power and wealth, often controlling trade and commerce in the Mediterranean. Nobles were typically landowners and participated in the governance of the city through the Great Council, which was the main legislative body.
Membership in the Venetian Nobility was often hereditary, with families maintaining their status through wealth and influence. Nobles enjoyed privileges such as tax exemptions and exclusive rights to certain offices. The decline of the Republic led to the eventual dissolution of the nobility's power and influence in Venice.
