Varna Necropolis
The Varna Necropolis is an ancient burial site located near the city of Varna in Bulgaria. Discovered in 1972, it dates back to around 4,500 BC and is one of the oldest known cemeteries in the world. The site contains over 300 graves, many of which are richly furnished with artifacts, including gold jewelry, pottery, and tools, indicating a complex society.
The necropolis is particularly famous for its gold treasures, which are considered some of the earliest examples of gold craftsmanship in Europe. These findings suggest that the people of the Varna culture had advanced social structures and trade networks, contributing significantly to our understanding of prehistoric Europe.
