Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus
Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) is a type of bacteria that has developed resistance to the antibiotic vancomycin, which is commonly used to treat serious infections. Enterococcus bacteria are normally found in the intestines and female genital tract, but when they become resistant, they can cause infections that are difficult to treat, especially in hospital settings.
VRE infections can occur in wounds, the bloodstream, or the urinary tract, particularly in patients with weakened immune systems or those who have undergone invasive procedures. Preventing the spread of VRE involves strict hygiene practices in healthcare facilities, including handwashing and the use of personal protective equipment.
