Vachanas
Vachanas are a form of rhythmic poetry that originated in the 12th century in the region of Karnataka, India. They are characterized by their simple language and direct expression of spiritual and philosophical ideas. Vachanas were primarily composed by the Lingayat saints, including notable figures like Basava and Akka Mahadevi, who aimed to convey their thoughts on devotion, morality, and social issues.
These verses often address the relationship between the individual and the divine, emphasizing personal experience over ritualistic practices. Vachanas played a significant role in the Veerashaiva movement, promoting equality and challenging societal norms. Their enduring influence can be seen in contemporary Kannada literature and spiritual discourse.
