Untouchables
The term "Untouchables" refers to a group of people in India historically considered outside the traditional caste system. They were subjected to severe social discrimination and were often denied basic rights and opportunities. In modern times, the term has evolved to "Dalits," which means "the oppressed," and many Dalits continue to fight for equality and social justice.
The caste system in India is a hierarchical social structure that divides people into different groups based on birth and occupation. The Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras represent the four main castes, with the Untouchables positioned at the bottom. Efforts to improve the status of Dalits include legal protections and affirmative action policies.
