USS Spence
The USS Spence (DD-512) was a Fletcher-class destroyer of the United States Navy, launched on December 8, 1943. It was named after Rear Admiral William Spence and served during World War II, participating in various naval operations in the Pacific Theater. The ship was equipped with advanced weaponry for its time, including torpedoes and anti-aircraft guns.
On December 18, 1944, the USS Spence tragically sank during a typhoon in the Philippine Sea, known as the Typhoon Cobra. The storm caused severe damage to several ships, and the Spence was lost along with 76 crew members. The wreck was later discovered, serving as a reminder of the dangers faced by naval forces during wartime.
