USS Pargo (SS-5)
The USS Pargo (SS-5) was a United States Navy submarine, launched on March 28, 1904. It was the first submarine in the U.S. Navy to be built specifically for military purposes. The Pargo was designed for coastal defense and had a displacement of about 200 tons. It was powered by a combination of electric batteries and a gasoline engine, allowing it to operate both underwater and on the surface.
The submarine was part of the early development of underwater warfare technology. Although it was commissioned in 1905, the Pargo had a short service life and was decommissioned in 1910. Its design and operational experiences contributed to the evolution of later submarines in the U.S. Navy.
