Types of Hearing Loss
Hearing loss can be categorized into three main types: conductive, sensorineural, and mixed. Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound waves cannot efficiently travel through the outer or middle ear, often due to blockages or infections. This type is usually temporary and can often be treated medically or surgically.
Sensorineural hearing loss involves damage to the inner ear or the auditory nerve, affecting sound processing. This type is often permanent and can result from aging, exposure to loud noises, or certain medical conditions. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of both conductive and sensorineural types, requiring a comprehensive approach for treatment.
