Tree of Heaven
The Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to China. It can reach heights of 50 to 80 feet and is known for its large, compound leaves and distinctive yellow-green flowers. This tree is often found in urban areas and disturbed sites due to its ability to thrive in poor soil conditions.
Despite its resilience, the Tree of Heaven is considered an invasive species in many regions, including parts of the United States. Its aggressive growth can outcompete native plants, leading to reduced biodiversity. The tree is also associated with the production of a chemical called ailanthone, which can inhibit the growth of nearby plants.
