Transylvania Purchase
The Transylvania Purchase refers to the acquisition of land in present-day West Virginia by the Transylvania Company in the late 18th century. This company, founded by Richard Henderson, aimed to settle and develop the region, which was part of the larger territory claimed by the British Crown. The purchase was made in 1775 from the Cherokee Nation, although the legality of the transaction was disputed.
The land acquired through the Transylvania Purchase was intended for settlement by European colonists. However, the deal faced opposition from both the Virginia government and Native American tribes, leading to conflicts and legal challenges. Ultimately, the purchase played a significant role in the westward expansion of the United States.
