Torrey pine trees
The Torrey pine tree (Pinus torreyana) is a rare species of pine native to the coastal regions of southern California. It is known for its tall, straight trunk and long, slender needles that grow in clusters of five. The tree can reach heights of up to 100 feet and is characterized by its distinctive, irregularly shaped cones.
There are two main populations of Torrey pines: one on Santa Rosa Island and the other on the mainland near La Jolla. These trees thrive in sandy soils and are adapted to withstand coastal winds and drought conditions. They are considered an important part of the local ecosystem, providing habitat for various wildlife species.
