Timucua people
The Timucua people were a group of Native American tribes that lived in what is now northern Florida and southern Georgia. They spoke the Timucua language and were known for their agricultural practices, cultivating crops like corn, beans, and squash. The Timucua society was organized into chiefdoms, with leaders known as caciques.
The Timucua encountered European explorers in the 16th century, which led to significant changes in their way of life. Diseases brought by the Europeans, along with conflicts, greatly reduced their population. By the 18th century, the Timucua people had largely disappeared as a distinct group, though their legacy remains in the region.
