Thoracic Bones
The thoracic bones consist of the thoracic vertebrae, which are the twelve vertebrae located in the middle section of the spine. These bones are labeled T1 to T12 and provide support for the rib cage, protecting vital organs such as the heart and lungs. They also allow for the flexibility and movement of the upper body.
In addition to the thoracic vertebrae, the thoracic skeleton includes the ribs and the sternum. The ribs are curved bones that form a protective cage around the thoracic cavity, while the sternum, or breastbone, connects to the ribs at the front. Together, these structures play a crucial role in respiratory function and overall stability.
