Thomas D'Arcy McGee
Thomas D'Arcy McGee was an Irish-Canadian politician, journalist, and poet born on April 13, 1825, in Ireland. He emigrated to Canada in 1842 and became a prominent advocate for Canadian Confederation, believing in the unity of the provinces. McGee was a key figure in the formation of Canada and worked to promote the rights of Irish Canadians.
As a member of the House of Commons, McGee served as a minister in various capacities, including as the Minister of Agriculture. He was known for his eloquent speeches and writings, which emphasized the importance of a diverse and inclusive Canada. Tragically, McGee was assassinated on April 7, 1868, due to his political beliefs.
