The Towers of Silence
The Towers of Silence, known as Dakhma in Zoroastrianism, are circular, raised structures used for the exposure of the dead. This ancient practice allows bodies to decompose naturally, as Zoroastrians believe in keeping the earth, fire, and water pure. The towers are typically located on high ground, away from populated areas.
In these towers, the deceased are placed in open-air enclosures, where scavenging birds, such as vultures, consume the remains. This method reflects the Zoroastrian principle of respecting nature and avoiding contamination of the elements. The practice is less common today, with many Zoroastrians opting for cremation or burial.
