The Coldest City
The Coldest City is a title often attributed to Yakutsk, the capital of the Sakha Republic in Russia. Located in eastern Siberia, it experiences extreme subarctic temperatures, with winter averages around -30°C (-22°F). The city is known for its harsh climate, where temperatures can drop below -40°C (-40°F) during the coldest months.
Despite the frigid conditions, Yakutsk is home to over 300,000 residents. The city has adapted to its environment, featuring buildings designed to withstand the cold and a vibrant culture that includes traditional Yakut practices. It also hosts the Permafrost Institute, which studies the effects of climate on frozen ground.
