Thaipusam
Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated mainly by the Tamil community, particularly in India, Malaysia, and Singapore. It honors Lord Murugan, the son of Shiva and Parvati, and marks the occasion when he received a divine spear to defeat the demon Soorapadman. The festival typically occurs in January or February during the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai.
During Thaipusam, devotees engage in various acts of devotion, including carrying kavadis—ornate structures adorned with flowers and fruits—as a form of penance. Many participants also pierce their skin with hooks and skewers, symbolizing their faith and commitment. The festival is a vibrant display of spirituality, community, and cultural heritage.
