Tetrad Analysis
Tetrad Analysis is a method used in the field of communication theory to evaluate the effects of a specific technology or medium. It was developed by Marshall McLuhan, who proposed that every medium has four key effects: enhancement, obsolescence, retrieval, and reversal. This framework helps to understand how a new technology changes society and influences human behavior.
In Tetrad Analysis, each of the four effects is examined to assess the overall impact of the medium. For example, a new social media platform might enhance communication, obsolesce face-to-face interactions, retrieve older forms of communication like letter writing, and potentially reverse into negative effects like reduced attention spans. This analysis provides a comprehensive view of technological influence.
