Tenement
A tenement is a type of residential building, often found in urban areas, that typically houses multiple families or individuals. These buildings are usually characterized by their small, cramped living spaces and shared facilities, such as bathrooms and kitchens. Tenements were especially common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, providing affordable housing for immigrants and low-income workers in cities like New York.
Historically, tenements often had poor living conditions, with inadequate sanitation and ventilation. Over time, reforms were introduced to improve these conditions, leading to better housing standards. Today, the term "tenement" can also refer to any multi-family dwelling, though it still carries connotations of the challenges faced by residents in the past.
