Temporalis Muscle
The Temporalis Muscle is a fan-shaped muscle located on the side of the head. It plays a crucial role in the movement of the jaw, specifically in closing the mouth and chewing food. This muscle originates from the temporal fossa of the skull and inserts into the coronoid process of the mandible, allowing for powerful biting and grinding motions.
In addition to its primary function in mastication, the temporalis muscle is also involved in the overall function of the jaw joint, known as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Proper functioning of the temporalis is essential for activities like speaking and swallowing, making it an important muscle for daily life.
