Temporomandibular Joint
The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects the lower jaw, or mandible, to the skull. It is located just in front of the ear on each side of the head and allows for movements such as opening and closing the mouth, chewing, and speaking. The joint is made up of bones, cartilage, and ligaments, which work together to facilitate smooth movement.
TMJ disorders can occur when there are issues with the joint or surrounding muscles, leading to pain, discomfort, or difficulty in jaw movement. Common symptoms include jaw pain, clicking sounds, and headaches. Treatment options may include physical therapy, medications, or dental appliances to help alleviate symptoms.
