Te Wherowhero
Te Wherowhero was a prominent Māori chief and the first Māori King, known for his leadership in the 19th century. He was born around 1800 and belonged to the Waikato iwi (tribe). Te Wherowhero played a crucial role in uniting various tribes under the Kīngitanga movement, which aimed to establish a Māori monarchy to protect their land and rights.
His reign as king began in 1858, and he was given the title of Pōtatau Te Wherowhero. Te Wherowhero's leadership was marked by efforts to maintain peace among tribes and resist European encroachment. He passed away in 1860, leaving a lasting legacy in Māori history.
