Pōtatau Te Wherowhero
Pōtatau Te Wherowhero was the first Māori King of New Zealand, crowned in 1858. He belonged to the Waikato iwi (tribe) and played a significant role in uniting various Māori groups under a single leadership to resist European colonization. His reign marked the beginning of the Kīngitanga movement, which aimed to establish a Māori monarchy.
Te Wherowhero was born around 1800 and was known for his leadership and military skills. His coronation was a pivotal moment in Māori history, symbolizing the desire for self-determination and unity among Māori people. He passed away in 1860, leaving a lasting legacy.
