Taenia solium
Taenia solium is a type of parasitic flatworm, commonly known as the pork tapeworm. It primarily infects humans through the consumption of undercooked or contaminated pork. Once ingested, the larvae attach to the intestines and can grow into long chains of segments, known as proglottids, which can produce thousands of eggs.
In addition to causing intestinal infections, Taenia solium can lead to more severe health issues, such as cysticercosis. This occurs when the eggs are ingested and develop into larvae that can migrate to various tissues, including the brain, causing neurological problems. Proper cooking and hygiene practices can help prevent infection.
