Surtsey
Surtsey is a volcanic island located off the southern coast of Iceland. It emerged from the sea during a volcanic eruption that began in 1963 and lasted until 1967. The island is about 2.7 square kilometers in size and is known for its unique geological features and diverse ecosystems.
Due to its relatively recent formation, Surtsey has been a valuable site for scientific research. Scientists study the island to understand how life colonizes new land and how ecosystems develop over time. Access to Surtsey is restricted to protect its natural environment and ongoing research efforts.
