Surgical Site Infection
A Surgical Site Infection (SSI) is an infection that occurs at or near a surgical incision within 30 days of an operation. It can happen when bacteria enter the body through the surgical wound, leading to symptoms such as redness, swelling, and discharge. SSIs can complicate recovery and may require additional treatment, including antibiotics or further surgery.
Preventing SSIs involves proper sterilization of surgical instruments, maintaining a clean environment, and following post-operative care guidelines. Patients are also advised to keep the surgical area clean and report any signs of infection to their healthcare provider promptly.
