Sultan Selim III
Sultan Selim III was the 28th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, reigning from 1789 to 1807. He is known for his efforts to modernize the empire, particularly in military and administrative reforms. Selim aimed to strengthen the Ottoman military by adopting European techniques and technologies, which included the establishment of the Nizam-ı Cedid, a new army trained in modern warfare.
Despite his reforms, Selim III faced significant opposition from traditionalists within the empire. In 1807, he was deposed in a coup led by the Janissaries, the elite military corps that resisted his changes. His reign marked a pivotal moment in the Ottoman Empire's struggle to adapt to a rapidly changing world.
