Storm Surge Barriers
Storm surge barriers are large structures designed to protect coastal areas from flooding caused by storm surges, which are rapid rises in sea level during storms. These barriers can be gates or walls that close off inlets and estuaries, preventing seawater from inundating land during extreme weather events like hurricanes.
When a storm approaches, the barriers are activated to block the incoming water, safeguarding homes, infrastructure, and ecosystems. Examples of storm surge barriers include the Maasvlakte Barrier in the Netherlands and the New Orleans Surge Barrier in the United States, both of which play crucial roles in flood prevention.
