Stockholm Bloodbath
The Stockholm Bloodbath refers to a series of executions that took place in November 1520 in Stockholm, Sweden. Following the victory of the Danish King Christian II over Swedish nobles, he ordered the execution of many political opponents, primarily members of the Swedish nobility. This event marked a significant moment in the struggle for Swedish independence from Danish rule.
The bloodbath resulted in the deaths of around 80 to 100 individuals, including prominent figures like Sten Sture the Younger. The brutal actions of Christian II led to widespread outrage and ultimately contributed to the rise of the Swedish Reformation and the eventual establishment of Sweden as an independent nation.
