Sternohyoid
The sternohyoid is a muscle located in the neck. It is part of the group of muscles known as the infrahyoid muscles, which help in the movement of the hyoid bone and the larynx. The sternohyoid originates from the sternum and the clavicle and inserts into the body of the hyoid bone. Its primary function is to depress the hyoid bone during swallowing and speaking.
This muscle plays a crucial role in various neck movements and is innervated by the ansa cervicalis, a loop of nerves in the neck. Proper functioning of the sternohyoid is important for maintaining airway patency and facilitating speech. Dysfunction in this muscle can lead to difficulties in swallowing or voice changes.
