Stephen Van Rensselaer
Stephen Van Rensselaer (1764-1839) was an influential American landowner and politician in the early 19th century. He was a member of the prominent Van Rensselaer family and served as the last patroon of the Rensselaerswyck estate in New York. His leadership helped shape the development of the region, particularly in agriculture and infrastructure.
In addition to his land management, Van Rensselaer was active in politics, serving in the New York State Assembly and as a major general in the New York State Militia. He was also a key supporter of education, contributing to the founding of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1824.
