Stapedius
The stapedius is a small muscle located in the middle ear. It is the smallest skeletal muscle in the human body and is attached to the stapes, one of the three tiny bones that help transmit sound vibrations from the outer ear to the inner ear. The primary function of the stapedius is to stabilize the stapes and protect the inner ear from loud sounds by dampening its movement.
When exposed to loud noises, the stapedius contracts reflexively, which reduces the amplitude of sound vibrations. This protective mechanism is part of the acoustic reflex, helping to prevent potential damage to the delicate structures of the inner ear and maintaining hearing health.
